I used the vCenter simple install and went to try to use the vCenter webclient. I could get to https://hostname but when I clicked on

Log in to vSphere Web Client

It came up with the following error:

In order for this direct link to work, you must first log in to the vSphere Web Client at least once from https://{webclient-host}:{webclient-https-port}.

After some digging I found that I had to actually install the vSphere Web client, its not part of the simple install. After I installed it I still had the same issue. After some more digging…

I found you need to go to this URL from the host first.

https://localhost:9443/admin-app/

Then my browser complained I didn’t have java and adobe, but did offer an alternative way to register the client which was very simple:

Right click on this file and select open.

C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\vSphereWebClient\scripts\admin-cmd.bat

After this I was able to go to https://hostname and then click Login to vSphere Web Client just fine.

On which host do you have to start a browser and surf to https://localhost:9443/admin-app/? On the vCenter host?
